ATM Upgrade list ~ Jons-attic ~ Plug-your-ears ~ FTO
FOR TRADE ONLY
Although of the same high quality as the ATM-series, these discs have for various reasons not been deemed suitable for "official" ATM status. Some of these discs relay in part on officially available material, and are made by fans - for fans - with the intent of being alternate versions of official albums. The discs in question are however not in any way intended as substitutes for their official counterparts, but merely as supplements to these. Royal Albert Hall Rehearsals - Composite (For Trade Only FTO 004 / 21.11.2003 / 1CDR)
Royal Albert Hall, London 24.02.69 [Rehearsals]; 52:16
Stereo & Mono Sbd Composite [Old & New 2003 Source];
Low Gen - Digitally Restored & Speed corrected [The pitch for ATM 220 "Royal Albert Hall Rehearsals" was chosen by syncing the concert audio to the official "Stone Free" (13) from "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts". Since this was all from a common source it seemed likely that pitch would be constant. The vocals on the rehearsals did however sound slow, and it turned out that indeed the pitch of most of the rehearsals was about 3% below that of the concert. While this could indicate a real pitch difference rather than a tape speed difference, together with the sluggish-sounding vocals in the rehearsals it's pretty convincing that the rehearsals are really running off-speed. Tuning during the concert is just about exactly 2/3 of a full tone below standard tuning. Each track of the rehearsals was adjusted to match this tuning. This resulted in an upward 3% pitch adjustment on every rehearsal track except the first ("Hey Joe" (49)) which was sharper than the rest and only required a +1% adjustment. The chunk of "Hound Dog" takes, plus some of the attached chat and tuning, was taken from LP. Pitch on the LP was even more problematic. The last half of the LP is at correct speed but the first part has a lot of variation. "Hey Joe" (49) starts off 8% fast, decreases to 5% by the end of the song, and continues to decrease until the end of the 2nd "Hound Dog" take (4), where speed becomes accurate and stays that way. So varying correction was required for the LP source. Speed on all the tracks sounds about right now, and this composite can be taken as a reasonably accurate reproduction of the correct running speed for all the rehearsals tracks.]
notes: - The New 2003 Source portion is Speed corrected from the already Digitally Restored ATM 220 "Royal Albert Hall Rehearsals", while the Old Source portion is Digitally Restored & Speed corrected from the vinyl bootleg "He Was A Friend Of Yours" (ftbfs: B035). - Raw version of the New 2003 Source material is available. - At the time of release this Composite featured all available material from the Royal Albert Hall Rehearsals in the best possible quality. Later an upgrade of the New 2003 source portion featuring additional material has become available as part of ATM 227-228 "Experience - Coming soon to a Theatre near you!" (straight transfer) and JPIO 033-034 "He Was A Friend Of Ours - Remasterd" (speed adjusted). *************************************************************

notes: - General notes: This set collects all the material from the five BBC radio sessions for which material exists. It might seem pointless with the official release of "BBC Sessions", but there were some drawbacks to that release. The 3 major areas that were perceived as weaknesses were: 1) some tracks and other various bits and pieces were omitted from the official release, 2) many of the tracks were presented in simulated stereo rather than true mono, or with added effects such as reverb, and 3) track ordering was not by session. Recording order of each session is not known for certain; A few things are known, but still the track order within each session is semi-random. Most material is not from official public releases, but from "Hendrix at the Beeb", a Westwood One radio show from Fall 1992. All material here is true mono. The "Beeb" material is all mono to start with, and in addition presents some tracks in a dry mix that the official releases have with reverb. It's not entirely clear whether all the reverb is a late addition; some of the 28.03.67 tracks, which survive from BBC transcription LP, also have reverb. Unfortunately some things weren't on the "Beeb" discs: alternate takes and parts of interviews. These were taken from other sources as shown in the track list. EH material was taken from LP except in cases where clipping wasn't present, and channels were averaged to restore mono. Since the fake stereo was done by applying different EQ to each channel, averaging was a legitimate way to restore the mono. Overall EQ may still be somewhat affected, but not much by the sound of it. - Comments on individual tracks: The voiceover and first chords of "Purple Haze" (6) were missing on the Beeb disc, so these were patched from the EH release. Material from 28.03.67 survives only in the form of a BBC transcription LP, and is very trebly, at times harsh. Two of these tracks were treated with some mild EQ of the higher frequencies to remove some of this harshness. The Stevie Wonder jam ("I Was Made To Love Her / Ain't Too Proud To Beg") was nearly complete on the Beeb disc, but some narration was inserted between the two parts of that jam, in the process losing a few seconds of silence and faint chat. This portion was edited in from the EH release. The first sentence by Brian Matthews in the 06.10.67 interview was missing on the Beeb disc, this was patched from a tape source. One track was taken from a poor-quality source: The complete take of "Drivin' South" (1) from 06.10.67. This has been on many bootleg LPs from the earliest days, and those are still the primary source for this track. This appears to have been taped with a mic from radio, so quality is pretty poor. Repressings of the track are inferior in sound quality; The original appearance on the UK bootleg "Live Experience 1967-68" (ftbfs: B001) from 1970 is the best. Despite the better sound quality, pressing quality of the original issue is poor; A handful of copies were transferred, some of which were visually mint, and there was still a lot of noise. This was cleaned as well as possible, but there's still some crackle left. The Tony Hall interview was most complete on the UniVibes CD, but a nearly 1-minute portion in the middle was missing. This was present on the Beeb CD so that part was patched from that source, with a little EQ so that it would match the rest of the interview. The riffing before "Day Tripper" (3) was partially present on the EH release. The start of it was patched from a tape source, again with some EQ to match the sound. - The BBC Playhouse Theatre, London 06.10.67 interview was actually conducted by Tommy Vance, but the interviewer on this recording is Brian Matthews. The reason for this oddity is as follows: The original transcription discs/tapes with Tommy Vance and John Peels contributions to the "Top Gear" shows have apparently been lost, all the chat on these shows are later overdubs by Brian Matthews for his Swedish (English language) "Top Of The Pops" RADIO show - NOT the famous British TV show. Seeing the source for the recording featured here is the Swedish show, the featured voice is of course Brian Matthews' later overdub instead of Tommy Vance's original. The same goes for the spoken intro to "Little Miss Lover" (4). (Thanks to Renwick for sending me a mail to clarify this.) *************************************************************
notes: - Includes the incomplete "Wild Thing" (16) omitted from most bootleg-releases of this recording; 0:28. - This recording is 1 Gen lower than the source used for Dagger Records' official bootleg "Live in Ottawa", 2001. - Upgrade of ATM 059 "Storming The Capitol". - This disc has also incorrectly been circulated as ATM 059 Rev A "Storming The Capitol", but is in fact NOT part of the ATM-series. - An alternate version of this set, featuring the 3 available tracks from the 1st show, is also in circulation. Those tracks are "Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (19), "Fire" (102) and "Purple Haze" (128), and are lifted from the Dagger Records' CD "Paris "Ottawa 1968". *************************************************************

Gothenburg '70 - Raw Source (For Trade Only FTO 013-014 / 2007 / 2CDR)
Stora Scenen, Liseberg, Gothenburg 01.09.70 [Almost Complete Show]
Aud; 1st Gen (except patch in "Hey Joe" (59): 2nd Gen) - Digitally Restored & Speed corrected
notes: - This version uses the same sources as ATM 162-163 "Gothenburg '70" but the ATM release has a different pitch and has been eq'd & de-noised. The raw 1st gen tape was in (two channel) mono but had loud crackling in one of the channels thus instead of using the tape as-is digital mono was made out of the better channel. The 1st gen tape has a cut in "Hey Joe" (59) that isn't present on the master, and a 2nd gen copy of the same master was used to patch the cut. This composite uses that digital mono version of the 1st gen tape with new pitch correction and the patch from a 2nd gen tape in "Hey Joe" (59). No de-noise and no eq applied (except for some eq adjustment in the 2nd gen patch).
- Source walkthrough: "Spanish Castle Magic" (49), {cut}, "Killing Floor" (18), {cut}, "Hear My Train A-Comin'" (51), {cut}, "Message To Love" (43) {cut at 6:45, on master}, "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)" (11) {cut at 1:25, on master}, "In From The Storm" (8), {cut}, "Hey Joe" (59) {cut at 0:28-0:55 patched with 2nd Gen tape}, {cut}, "Foxy Lady" (96), {cut}, "Red House" (78) {start cut, cut at 5:54, both on master}, {cut}, "Room Full Of Mirrors" (21) {start cut, on master}, {cut}, "Straight Ahead" (7) {drop-outs at 0:37-0:38, on all circulating versions so presumably on master?}, "Purple Haze" (104) {cut at 2:54-2:57, on master?}, "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" (85) {cuts at 11.07 and 11:11, taper rewinded the tape and recorded 2 bits of audience noise over the end of the track}.
note: - More Complete version of this Show than other Circulating versions, including the versions available on "The Warm Hello of the Sun" (ftbfs: 494) and "Jimi's Last Visit to Sweden Vol.2" (ftbfs: B494). *************************************************************

Boston Garden, Boston, MA 27.06.70 [3rd Source - Complete Show*];
60:06
Aud; Master [Master Cassette > CDR] - Phase offset corrected - (cut after "Fire" (73) because of tape flip. No music is missing.
notes: - Taped from quite some distance from the stage, so the recording is a little distant sounding and probably the poorest of the 3 available sources from this concert. *************************************************************
Fieldhouse, Regis College, Denver, CO 14.02.68 (For Trade Only FTO 016 / April 2008 / 1CDR)
notes: - Notable drop in level with tape problems at 0:27-0:36 in "Fire" (100). Nearly all introductions, tune-ups and chat between songs are missing (cut). The End of "Foxy Lady" (114) is slightly cut, and so are the beginnings of "The Wind Cries Mary" (24), "Spanish Castle Magic" (63) and "I Don't Love Today" (48). - The first version of this set to come into general circulation was distributed through www.crosstowntorrents.org april 2008. It was widely circulated, but was unfortunately sourced from a flawed disc, and suffered from index errors. The "correct" version is flawless and has no such errors. - Refer to Jimpress issue 86, p.17-18 for a comprehensive review of this tape. - Raw source version is available. *************************************************************
Flamingo Club, London 04.02.67 - Low Gen Composite (For Trade Only FTO 017 / xx.07.2008 / 1CDR)
[* A complete continous version of the Flamingo tape does not seem to circulate. Most existing copies of this tape have the end of the tape missing with the very end of "Wild Thing" (2) cut or with "Wild Thing" (2) complete but the MC's end announcement missing. All circulating copies also seem to be cut just before "Catfish Blues" (3) , fortunately different dubs either have overlap or have the cut at a different points so it's possible to patch it. Some people will no doubt find that the source circulating as "2nd gen" sounds better. That version however has been heavily eq'd, is in digital mono and runs at a different speed. The main source used for this composite would seem to be a an unaltered raw low gen version so it will sound quite different to what many people are used to listen to. The aim was to present the original master as complete as possible and as close to the way it originally sounded as possible.
Source info: Composite of two sources, phase & pitch corrected (by +5%). A raw low gen source was used as the main source. A cut before "Catfish Blues" (3) was patched from a heavily eq'd 2nd gen source, the eq was reversed but since the 2nd gen tape was digital mono there is a change in the hiss (from stereo to mono) in the patched section. Some clicks not on the master were removed and drop-outs fixed (as well as possible) at 0.39 in "Rock Me Baby" (1) , 2.24 in "Hey Joe (9) " and 6.40 in "Wild Thing" (2). At least the first two drop-outs were not on the original master as they are in stereo which is why it was possible to improve them by patching one channel with the other. Ultimately this composite is a compromise for the time being, somewhere there must be a straight low gen transfer of the complete uncut mono master or perhaps the master itself will pop up one day. Source 1: Master (reel?) > ? > cdr > cdr > wav; Raw low gen source. The MC's speech after "Wild Thing" (2) is complete. The cut before "Catfish Blues" (3) takes place before Jimi mentions Muddy Waters, several seconds are missing. Phase & pitch corrected (by +5%) Source 2: Master (reel?) > 2nd gen; Heavily eq'd digital mono 2nd gen source. This source was used to patch the cut before "Catfish Blues" (3). The MC's speech after "Wild Thing" (2) is missing. The cut before "Catfish Blues" (3) takes place after Jimi mentions Muddy Waters. There's a short repeat section on the tape at this point so there's actually no audio lost. (Info: Straight quote from the release notes)]

Eric Burdon & War featuring Jimi Hendrix: Ronnie Scott's Club, London 16 Sept 1970 - The Complete Recording (FTO 018-019 / 13.10.2008 / 2CDR)
Disc 1: 1st Set: "Gun"; 3:01 "Paint It Black medley"; 15:30 "Spill The Wine"; 8:22 "Mystery Train"; 6:13
Disc 2: 2nd Set: "Gun"; 7:40 "Paint It Black medley"; 15:37 "Blues For Memphis Slim" > "Mother Earth") (with Jimi Hendrix); 20:31 "Tobacco Road" (with Jimi Hendrix); 15:37
notes: - This is the complete existing recording of Eric Burdon & War's concert at Ronnie Scott's Club in London september 16th, 1970. The Show consisted of 2 sets. The Taper however unfortunately only had a C-90 cassette, so he flipped the cassette over, and recorded the last part of the concert over the first, thereby forever losing the start of the recording. Although lossy, as it's sourced from a wma-transfer of the master tape, this version of the recording is still vastly superior to other currently circulating versions. It's also considerably longer, and includes notably more music. The Old version clocked in at a little under 42 minutes. Here's that - plus an additional 50+ minutes (!). As for the 2 tracks that feature Hendrix, "Blues For Memphis Slim" (incl."Mother Earth") is now 8 minutes longer than before, and "Tobacco Road" is more than 9 minutes longer. Apart from a few (presumably) minor cuts, this recording features Hendrix's last public performance in it entirety. Untill a lossless version of the ma ster tape becomes available, this will stand as the definitive document of that event. - As circulated @ www.crosstowntorrents.org october 2008. - Refer to Jimpress issue 87, p.9-16 for a comprehensive review of this tape. *************************************************************

Aud; No Gen info (Possibly Low Gen but at least 2 generations removed from the master) (2 Source Composite*)
* Prepared from two different copies of ... [the same] ... tape. All copies in circulation seem to be incomplete, some copies only run for 46 minutes, others are almost complete at 55 minutes but they all have bits missing that other copies do have and most are high generation dubs with hiss, buzzing & crackle. Most copies have the end of "Purple Haze" (72) cut. "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" (51) fades out on the master but only after circa 9 minutes, many copies have the end of the track truncated. Almost all copies have some or all of the tune-up preceding "Stone Free" (17) cut. ... Both [copies used for this composite] are still hissy and some generations removed from the master but both sounded better than anything else in general circulation at the moment. This composite would now seem to include the complete recording, all cuts in the music were on all copies checked and thus seem to be on the master tape. (Info: Slightly edited quote of the release notes)]
Composite walkthrough (// indicates a cut in the tape, the spots where the main source was patched with the 2nd source are also noted): (Short missing bit of tune-up patched) // "Stone Free" (17) (fades in) // "Hear My Train A-Comin'" (22) (start slightly cut) // "Foxy Lady" (63) (start slightly cut) // "I Don't Live Today" (34) (start slightly cut) // "Fire" (57) (start cut, tape speed-up at 0.03, some slight tape damage / wobble - not on master?) // (end of "Fire" (57) and start of "Red House" (49) patched) "Red House" (49) (start cut) (cut at 2.41, tape speed-up at 6.37) // (tape flip on main source patched) "Star Spangled Banner" (21) (start slightly cut) > "Purple Haze" (70) (end garbled) // "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" (51) (start slightly cut, end fades out, very likely on the master as no other copy seems to run longer)
